McLaren counts on carbon

13 May 2016

At some point all technological innovations mix up with beauty. Sometimes it can happen that objects and devices created to satisfy some functional needs turn out to be precious themselves, besides their effectiveness in technology. In some cases this comes to be true because the innovation becomes a status symbol and everybody wants it. In some other cases the device is simply aesthetically beautiful and this is the case of carbon fibre.

It is light, resistant and isolating and it is now an exceptional material to build cars with great performances, helping, thus, engineers build something better every time, even though an improvement in performances can even correspond to a few meters more for these scientists.

Further more, carbon fibre is very beautiful: the refined weft that gives shape to any component and that is not visible at a certain distance, becomes very elegant and sophisticated if you take a closer look at it. Most of the people have even decided to use a transparent polish so that the fibre stays well visible.

This change in taste among consumers is not a brand new tendency. McLaren had already tried to follow the lead with a P1 prototype but it is only now that it is ready to run a true risk. The McLaren 675LT Spider MSO Carbon LT will be 40% made of carbon fibre which is, obviously, visible. Produced by the famous  McLaren Special Operations department, the car will be realised in 25 copies. Their performances will be processed by a 675-horse power, a maximum speed of 326 km/h and a 2,9-seconds acceleration to go from 0 to 100. These are not anyway the features that make this car unique: it is the gamble it represents in stead, Carbon is the new Black.
